In 2025, we already embarked on a Sleep-Easy, donated money to Padley@YMCA Derbyshire Community Hub’s running costs, gave technical heating support and helped with a variety of gardening projects across the region.
The volunteering projects have also brought a wide range of Vaillant employees together, including its newest cohort of Low Carbon Technician Apprentices, who formed part of the gardening team that helped clear and transform communal garden areas around Belper and Derby.
Vaillant brings engineering education into the mix as part of its ongoing YMCA partnership
Its latest project has now allowed us to share our industry-leading knowledge too, plus information on the varied roles available in the heating sector; all to inspire youngsters who may not previously have felt these options were open to them.
Eight students from a YMCA Key College participated in a weeklong Launch into Engineering programme.
Showcasing the impact strong partnerships can have in providing vital opportunities for young people, the Launch into Engineering programme combined our industry expertise with the Derby Museum of Making’s STEAM learning approach (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), to create one effective scheme.
Students used a variety of skills needed to make their own screwdriver and explored the wide range of roles available at Vaillant — from service engineers to production engineering teams. They also had the chance to put their questions to Henrik Hansen, Managing Director of Vaillant Group UK and Ireland.
Speaking about the opportunity this latest project offered, Gillian Sewell, CEO at YMCA Derbyshire, said, “At YMCA Derbyshire, we believe that programmes like Launch into Engineering are vital for empowering young people.”
“It gives hands-on, real-world learning experiences that build practical skills, boost confidence, and open doors to future opportunities. By connecting learners with local employers like Vaillant, we’re bridging the gap between education and employment while fostering a sense of community and possibility. These experiences are essential for helping young people overcome barriers and take meaningful steps toward their future.”
Joe Dunn, Plant Director at Vaillant Group UK, commented: “We were delighted to welcome the YMCA learners to our Belper manufacturing site as part of the Launch into Engineering program. It was a great week for everyone involved and it was inspiring to see the young people enjoying learning important key skills for engineering and manufacturing.
"The event gave the learners both hands on experience and the opportunity to talk and learn from some of Vaillant’s experienced engineers. Seeing the learner’s enthusiasm and the results of their week’s work was exciting. Initiatives like this are crucial for sparking interest in engineering and manufacturing and demonstrating the breadth of career options available in the sector.”
