Grants

The Government provides financial assistance to home-owners, community organisations, schools and others who want to install microgeneration technologies, including solar hot water systems. The scheme is know as The Low Carbon Building Scheme and full details are available on www.lowcarbonbuildings.org.uk

How much funding is available?

Homeowners can apply for a grant of £400 regardless of system size. The system must be installed by an accredited installer see www.est.org.uk/housingbuildings/funding/solarpv/finding and the system must include approved solar products. Vaillant auroTHERM exclusive products are approved and qualify for the grant. You must apply for the grant before installation commences.

Preparing to make a grant application

It makes sense to ensure your home is as energy efficient as possible before you consider investing in solar hot water systems. To qualify for the grant, you will be required to demonstrate that you have installed a basic level of energy efficient measures and you should endeavour to minimise your energy usage as much as practical before applying for the grant.

Minimum requirements for applying are:

a. You have minimum loft installation to meet current building regulations, where practicable - e.g. of 270mm of mineral wool

b. You have installed cavity wall insulation (if you have cavity walls)

c. You are using low energy light bulbs in all appropriate light fittings

d. You have installed basic controls for your heating system to include a room thermostat and a programmer or timer

Remember - you must obtain a quote from an accredited installer before applying for the grant.

As a homeowner you can apply for this £400 grant via www.est.org.uk/myhome/generating/application/
