Stage six: Heat pump electrical installation

  • Listen to the article

10.10.2008: Electrical installation of the heat pump; installation of the cable connections to the meter box/consumer unit and the installation of an appropriate fuse box.

(Electrical engineering partner)

I always undertake the electrical installation for the appliances installed by my plumbing partner. However, this heat pump installation was a first for me and required electrical conditions that were of a higher specification than used on most heating systems.

Starting at the meter box I installed a wire to a new fuse box which I mounted on the wall next to the heat pump. I took special care on the design of the fuses to ensure the electrical installation is safe and appropriate to the electrical load of the heat pump.

The compressor within the heat pump required a C rated fuse whilst the auxiliary backup heater required a B rated fuse.

What we learnt: Special care has to be taken with the design of the electrical installation. The requirements for larger cable diameters and a higher fuse rate will be greater than most household heating systems. Only an experienced electrical engineer should undertake the electrical installation elements of a heat pump. All safety regulations have to be considered.
