Stage eight: Heat Pump commissioning

  • Listen to the article

14.10.2008: Commissioning visit to check the heat pump installation and the control settings, and to complete the installation of the Intelligent Service communications system. During this visit it is essential to ensure the customer is familiar with the heat pump and the operation of the controls to ensure they get the best from the system.

(Vaillant Service Engineer)

After the installer arranged the commissioning visit with our Service office, I went to the site to meet the installer and the customer. This visit is required to install the Intelligent Service communications system and to establish the remote connection to the heat pump. The visit is also required so that the customer can claim their additional third year of warranty on the heat pump.

I visually checked the installation of the ground loop collector and the hydraulic connections to the heating system. I also ensured that all pipes have the right kind of insulation: thermal or water proof.

At the heat pump I checked that all sensors were installed in the correct place. With the information of the sensors and the electrical connection I could check the settings of the heat pump.

In this case, the heat pump installation had been completed perfectly and nothing had to be changed. The installation of the Intelligent Service communications system took a couple of minutes, although I had to adjust the position of the antenna a couple of times to ensure a good signal. With a simple phone call to the Service office I checked the strength of the signal and the data transfer was acceptable.

After I explained to the customer the main displays of the control, I showed him how to set up the time programmes for heating and domestic hot water. He was really interested in the technology and was keen to understand how to maximise the most efficient way of operating his new heat pump. I explained to him how his heating system will react in the future and how the heat pump and the gas boiler will communicate with each other.

What we learnt: The commissioning visit by a Vaillant service engineer is mainly done to ensure the heat pump has been correctly installed to a well designed system and that both the ground loop collector and heating circuits are correctly connected to the heat pump. It also provides the opportunity to set up the Intelligent Service communication system and offers the chance to discuss the operation of the heat pump with the customer so that they get the best from it.
