John Reid commented: “This boiler was suitable in every way for the client’s requirements. He has a large home and Vaillant’s ecoTEC exclusive 838 was exactly what he needed. The installation itself was really quite challenging because of the pipe work that had been used with the old open vented system. The system is now sealed. In addition we recommended that the client used the boiler in combination with Vaillant’s VRT 360f wireless programmable room thermostat for optimum efficiency. Vaillant’s VRT 360f room thermostat is a battery operated wireless thermostat, installed remotely from the boiler, and designed to make installation simple. It has a flexible seven-day or 24-hour time control, with independent time control for heating and hot water. When used with ecoTEC combination boilers, the hot water programme can be used to provide time control of the ecoTEC exclusive 'AquaComfort' warmstart system. The programmer itself has three independent on/off periods per day, central heating advance function, holiday setback function, adjustable setback temperature and three room temperature profiles. There is also a calendar function for automatic summer/winter changeover and the thermostat has a load compensator, which can be set to modulate the boiler, depending on the indoor room temperature, maximising fuel savings further.
Dr Richard Haynes, John Reid’s client, is a civil engineer and has been very impressed with the new boiler. Dr Haynes was impressed with the cost savings generated by what was a much more energy efficient boiler, and given such savings, it is anticipated that the boiler will pay for itself within two years.
Vaillant’s ecoTEC exclusive 838 condensing combination boiler is the most intuitive and innovative boiler in its class. It was specifically created to meet the increasing demand for a condensing combination boiler that provides both space heating and domestic hot water for larger domestic properties, and is available in two models, with DHW outputs of 32 and 38kW.
The SEDBUK band ‘A’ rated boiler has a wide modulation range; it stays in condensing mode for longer, maintaining high efficiencies at lower outputs. In addition, it has an electronically controlled modulating pump for lower electrical energy consumption, which further improves its overall energy performance.

With flow rates of 12.9 l/min and 15.2 l/min at a temperature rise of 35˚C, the ecoTEC exclusive offers greater hot water comfort, quicker filling of baths and higher performance for showering. The boilers also have a fully modulating low NOx burner, stainless steel heat exchanger, built in 2-stage frost thermostat and can easily be converted to LPG. Both the ecoTEC exclusive 832 and 838 use Vaillant’s simple push fit flue system available in a range of different lengths for flexibility of siting. It has a lift weight of 44kg and case dimensions of 800mm x 480mm x 450mm.
