The future of energy unearthed

  • Listen to the article

15.09.2008: Vaillant, the UK’s leading manufacturer of domestic heating solutions, continues to reduce the UK’s dependence on fossil fuels with the introduction of its geoTHERM ground source heat pump range, which includes the geoTHERM and the geoTHERM exclusive. Using latent energy stored in the ground, Vaillant’s heat pump range can generate hot water for space heating and domestic hot water use, while making a significant contribution towards the reduction of environmental pollution.

geoTHERM

Designed with Vaillant’s high levels of quality and reliability, each ground source heat pump sets the standards in renewable energy for domestic and commercial applications. The geoTHERM draws heat from the earth through a closed ground loop, transfers this energy through a CFC-free refrigerant R 407C cycle and outputs usable energy in a higher temperature form to feed underfloor heating or radiator systems. By using the latent energy from the earth, temperatures within the heating circuit can reach up to 62°C, sufficient to run a central heating system without the need for an additional heat source. In the case of higher required temperatures, an integrated auxiliary backup heater will boost the output for the appliances. Not only does the geoTHERM provide high levels of central heating comfort, it also includes a three-way diverter valve providing a simple means of connecting to an external hot water cylinder for the production of domestic hot water.

geoTHERM exclusive

As well as the features above the geoTHERM exclusive also has an array of additional benefits, including domestic hot water all through the year, an integrated 175 litre stainless steel cylinder and a split mounting facility. This allows the hot water cylinder to be easily separated from the heat unit, reducing both weight and volume to simplify installation.

Vaillant’s geoTHERM exclusive heat pumps also incorporate a passive cooling feature as standard. This, in addition to heat, can provide summer cooling when used with an underfloor heating system.
Energy efficient

All of the geoTHERM models are energy efficient and provide clean and efficient use of environmental friendly energy. Each heat pump within the geoTHERM range includes innovative features, such as the Intelligent Service system, which allows Vaillant engineers to monitor or adjust the settings of the heat pump via the internet, removing the need for an engineer visit. This, in conjunction with the built in weather compensation unit, which only generates heat when needed, provides greater comfort conditions for each customer and maximises the use of free energy.

Mark Wilkins, head of renewable marketing development at Vaillant said: “Ground source heat pumps have their place within the industry as traditional energy resources decline, and will play an important role in our future energy provision.
The geoTHERM is a strong addition to our growing portfolio of energy saving, environmentally friendly products. Not only is it reliable and well-proven technology that reduces CO2 emissions, but with Vaillant’s technical design support and back up it provides an effective and efficient way of harnessing energy from a natural source.”

Cost saving

All new geoTHERM products are available in outputs ranging from 6kW to 46kW, with the 22-46kW geoTHERM range specially designed to operate in larger properties or in cascade installations for higher outputs. This will allow running costs to remain low, reducing energy bills all year round. Heat pumps can also reduce the impact of rising oil or gas prices and provide independence from fossil fuels, resulting in a brighter and warmer future.

Installation

All Vaillant heat pumps can be connected to either a horizontal or vertical ground loop collector depending upon the customer’s preferences and site conditions. Vaillant has developed strong links with a number of drilling and ground works partners to make the whole process for customers as quick and stress free as possible.
Grants are now available from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme* to help with the costs of installing a ground source heat pump.

Commissioning

Vaillant offer a free of charge commissioning service on their range of heat pumps, with all commissioning being undertaken by Vaillant’s own directly employed service engineers. When this commissioning service is taken up, customers will get an additional year of warranty. Full details of how to arrange a commissioning visit, after the installation has been completed, are provided with each appliance.
